Why I Switched to DIY Skincare (and Never Looked Back)

✍️ How I Discovered DIY Skincare (and Why It Changed Everything)

DIY skincare wasn’t always part of my life. For years, I was happy wandering through beauty aisles, choosing creams and serums that promised glowing skin or fewer wrinkles. My beauty routine was filled with pretty packaging, long ingredient lists, and little understanding of what I was putting on my face.

That changed when a friend asked me to pick a rose macerate from a local natural cosmetics store. The moment I stepped inside, everything felt different. The smells weren’t synthetic or overpowering—they were gentle, earthy, soothing. It was my first true introduction to natural ingredients, and I was instantly hooked.

A sign on the counter caught my eye: “Workshop—Make Your Own Skincare.” I asked if there was space. There was. I signed up, just to see what it was like.

At the same time, I had just started massage therapy. My therapist used essential oils, and when she opened a bottle of ylang-ylang, that was it—love at first inhale. From there, everything snowballed. I enrolled in aromatherapy school, where one of the modules focused on homemade skincare and how to formulate products from scratch.

And the first time I blended water and oil into a cream with an emulsifier? That moment of transformation felt like pure joy. A kind of alchemy—but honest, simple, and deeply personal. I finally knew exactly what I was putting on my skin.

But let me ask you something.

Have you ever thought about how many cream tubes you’ve tossed in the trash over the years? Or what was actually inside them?

I hadn’t either—until I did.

Once I started making my DIY skincare, I couldn’t unsee it anymore: the overflowing bins of plastic packaging, the endless INCI lists full of unpronounceables, and the strange realization that I was trusting big brands more than I trusted my own hands.

And honestly, most of those creams promised smooth skin or glowing skin but rarely delivered. Some even caused irritation because I had no idea which skincare ingredients were doing what.

When I started exploring homemade skincare, everything shifted. I learned how to read labels, choose natural ingredients, and simplify without compromising results. It wasn’t about perfection—it was about intention.

🌍 H2: What Store-Bought Skincare Is Really Costing Us

The environmental impact of store-bought beauty products is deeper—and messier—than most of us realize. I didn’t think much about it either… until I did.

Let’s break it down.

  • Chemical Pollution: Many mainstream products contain nasty chemicals that rinse off and end up in rivers and oceans. They may look pretty, but some of these ingredients disrupt ecosystems and do absolutely nothing good for skin health. Worse, they can harm your skin over time, especially with daily use.
  • Packaging Waste: The beauty industry creates over 120 billion packaging units every year. Most of it is non-recyclable plastic. And I hate to say it, but that “clean” brand with minimalist branding is still contributing to the pile.
  • Deforestation and Resource Extraction: Let’s talk palm oil. It’s in everything—from lip balm to body wash—and its demand leads to deforestation, habitat destruction, and increased carbon emissions. Some so-called “natural ingredients” have a heavy footprint, too.
  • Water Waste: Water isn’t just an ingredient—it’s used in massive amounts during production. Add in daily use, rinsing, and long shower routines, and the beauty industry becomes surprisingly thirsty.
  • Carbon Emissions: From global shipping to resource extraction, every product leaves a footprint. While it’s hard to be perfect, it’s empowering to know that going natural DIY—even part-time—can make a dent.

What shocked me most was that many of the products I thought were helping my skin were doing more harm than good. Some stripped my skin’s barrier, and others caused mild irritation that I brushed off as “just part of the process.” Looking back, I wish I’d known sooner.

Even simple kitchen ingredients—like ground oats or herbal infusions—can gently remove dead skin cells and calm irritation. Add a few drops of essential oil; it feels more like a spa treatment than a compromise.

This isn’t about fear. It’s about awareness—and choosing better when we can. For our skin. And for planet Earth.

💄 H2: The Joy of Making (and Why I Only Buy Mascara)

Creating  homemade beauty products hasn’t been all roses and rosehip oil. There were definitely moments of chaos—think weird colors, clumpy creams, and masks that looked more like cake batter than skincare.

🥄 H3: Trial, Error, and Cocoa Powder Everywhere

One of my early “brilliant” ideas was a DIY bronzing balm. I mixed in 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder, thinking this would give me that sun-kissed glow.

Spoiler: it gave me streaks. Everywhere. 😅

Instead of achieving the glowing skin I imagined, I looked like I’d been dusted for fingerprints. But hey, every experiment teaches you something.

And then there was the time I used way too much coconut oil in a DIY face mask and ended up with a shine that could rival a glazed doughnut. Delicious? Maybe. Practical? Not so much.

But honestly? That’s the charm of DIY. You mess up, you laugh, you learn. And over time, you start to feel your way through it. You get to know your ingredients, your skin, your preferences. You discover that simplicity often works best.

Now, I create products that are gentle, effective, and totally tailored to my skin. While I still experiment with textures and new DIY recipes, I’ve found my rhythm—and it’s deeply satisfying. I can swap ingredients based on the season, make something quick in a pinch, or play around with new ideas whenever inspiration strikes.

The rest of my beauty routine is slowly becoming more handmade, intentional, and aligned with my skin’s needs.

Not every day does the face project work out, but that’s part of what makes it fun. You learn as you go, and your skin learns with you.

That said… I still buy mascara. 😄

It’s the one thing I haven’t tried to make. It goes too close to my eyes, and that area is just too sensitive for experiments. So yes—mascara stays store-bought. And I’m completely at peace with that.

💡 H2: Easy DIY Skincare Swaps to Try This Earth Month

If you’re curious but not ready to become an apothecary, start small. These DIY skincare swaps are beginner-friendly, surprisingly effective, and, best of all, plastic-free.

🌿 H3: Cucumber eye mask

Who hasn’t placed cold cucumber slices over their eyes in high school? I definitely did—and it worked.

It’s the perfect natural alternative to conventional eye cream—refreshing, affordable, and beautifully simple.

🌿 H3: Green Tea for Glowing Skin

Steeped and cooled green tea makes a surprisingly effective toner. It’s full of antioxidants, calms irritation, and adds that subtle glow we always chase. But use it immediately.

🌿 H3: Coconut Oil and Lip Scrub

Coconut oil and brown sugar were my very first DIY duo. Stirred together in a tiny jar, they make the simplest lip scrub ever.

It exfoliates gently, leaves your lips soft and smooth, and takes all of 30 seconds to make.

Bonus: no plastic packaging and no mystery ingredients—just soft, happy lips and that faint coconut scent.

🌿 H3: Face Mask for Every Skin Mood

A basic face mask is one of the easiest ways to start with DIY skincare. And honestly, who hasn’t mixed green tea with bentonite clay and is hoping for that perfect texture and instant glow? I know I have.

Some were too runny, some too thick. But every one of them taught me something new about my skin—and that’s the joy of it.

🌿 H3: Sugar Scrub for Soft, Glowy Skin

Let’s be real—who hasn’t mixed jojoba oil, shea butter, and sugar for a quick DIY scrub? That blend was one of my earliest “success stories,” and I still come back to it. It’s perfect for hard-working hands, elbows, or pre-shave prep, and it always leaves skin feeling silky smooth.

Plus, with one drop of essential oils, it’s basically a mini spa treatment in your kitchen.

There are so many simple DIY skincare recipes waiting to be explored—gently, slowly, in your own time.

🌱 H2: Try Replacing Just One Thing During Month of planet earth

If you’re feeling curious—or even just slightly tempted—to dip your toes into DIY skincare, my advice is simple: start small. One product. One moment. One shift in your beauty routine.

You don’t have to turn your bathroom into an apothecary overnight. In fact, I don’t recommend it. Because while natural ingredients are powerful and beautiful, they still require care and attention. Some combinations might not work for your skin. And even with DIY recipes, it’s important to patch test—just in case something causes an allergic reaction or doesn’t sit right with your skin type.

Remember: natural doesn’t mean immune to irritation. Lavender can calm… or harm your skin, depending on how it’s used.

But here’s the good news—once you start exploring, learning, and adjusting, it becomes incredibly intuitive. And there’s something deeply satisfying about knowing you’ve made something with your own hands that’s kind to your skin and the planet.

So since it’s Earth Month, why not make a tiny swap? Replace your toner with a chamomile infusion. Try a simple face mask with oats and honey. Or make your first balm using just three ingredients. There are so many diy recipes out there waiting for you to try them—gently, slowly, in your own time.

Just one switch can begin a whole new way of caring—for your skin, your health, and the Earth.

🌸 Conclusion: One Small Shift Can Change Everything

Switching to DIY skincare wasn’t about doing everything perfectly. It was about slowing down, learning what my skin truly needs, and creating little rituals that feel good—inside and out.

I’ve had my fair share of recipe flops and strange textures, but each moment taught me something. About ingredients. About patience. About myself.

And honestly? There’s nothing quite like the feeling of making something beautiful and real with your own hands.

So this month, if one tiny part of you is curious—follow it. Start with one product, one moment, one change. Let it be the beginning of a gentler beauty routine rooted in intention, natural ingredients, and the simple joy of caring for your skin—and the planet.

Here’s to healthy skin, less waste, and more joy.

With love,

Kristina 🌿
