Why I Created Evening Calm

After long days filled with screen time, city dust, or just the ordinary chaos of life, my skin often felt tired—and my old store-bought removers didn’t help. Even those labeled “gentle” left my face red or tight. I needed something that respected my skin’s natural balance—no more stinging eyes, no more dry patches.

So I started experimenting.

I wanted a makeup cleansing oil that would effortlessly melt away mascara and SPF, while wrapping my skin in calm. Something that felt like a small act of care at the end of the day.

Formulator’s Note: This recipe is built around my signature DIY Rosemary Oil Infusion. To understand the botanical logic, chemotypes, and science behind why I chose rosemary for this specific formula, I recommend reading my complete Rosemary in Skincare Guide. or explore how different botanicals behave in my Botanical Library.

And if you love DIY blends as much as I do, you’ll find more waterless, skin-respecting formulas inside the DIY Skincare Recipe Library.

Why This Makeup Cleansing Oil Works

If you’ve ever experienced burning or irritation from traditional cleansers, you’re not alone. The skin around the eyes is delicate, and harsh surfactants often disrupt the barrier.

Cleansing oils work because they are lipophilic — meaning they dissolve other oils, including sebum, foundation, sunscreen, and mascara.

For this formula, I chose:

  • Sunflower Seed Oil – lightweight, barrier-supportive, rich in vitamin E
  • Refined Sweet Almond Oil – nourishing yet gentle, ideal for reactive skin
  • Polyglyceryl-4 Oleate (Durosoft PG4-O) – a mild natural emulsifier that allows the oil to rinse clean with water

This is the same emulsifier I used in my Morning Green – Rosemary Cleansing Body Oil, which speaks to its versatility and skin compatibility.

Instead of foam, you get emulsification. Instead of stripping, you get lipid-compatible cleansing.

And because this formula is fully waterless, no preservative is required — a practical example of why waterless systems can be beautifully simple.

Method

  1. Weigh Polyglyceryl-4 Oleate into a heat-safe beaker.
  2. Add sunflower oil and sweet almond oil.
  3. Heat gently in a water bath to approximately 70°C while stirring continuously until uniform.
  4. Remove from heat.
  5. Allow to cool to about 40°C.
  6. Add Vitamin E and optional fragrance (max 0.5%).
  7. Stir thoroughly and pour into a sterilized pump bottle.
  8. Store in a cool, dark place.

Heating ensures proper integration of the emulsifier for smooth oil-to-milk transformation.

Tip: Proper heating ensures the emulsifier integrates fully and gives that silky milky effect when water is added.

How to Use & Store

Start with dry hands and a dry face.

Apply 3–4 pumps directly to the skin. Massage slowly, especially over mascara and sunscreen.

Add warm water and continue massaging. The oil will transform into a soft cleansing milk.

Rinse thoroughly or remove with a damp cloth.

Store in a cool, dry place and prevent water from entering the bottle.

Scent & Texture Profile

Evening Calm is intentionally minimal.

This formula contains no essential oils, as it’s designed for use around the delicate eye area.

If you prefer a subtle scent, you may add a cosmetic-grade, eye-safe fragrance at a very low concentration (up to 0.5%). The formula remains effective either way.

You can leave it completely fragrance-free — it works beautifully that way, with only the naturally soft, slightly nutty aroma of sweet almond and sunflower oil.

The texture is fluid and silky. On contact with water, it transforms into a light cleansing milk that rinses clean without residue.

Skin feels calm, supple, and balanced — never tight.

Troubleshooting

Oil doesn’t emulsify well → Emulsifier may not have been fully integrated. Reheat gently and stir thoroughly.

Feels too heavy → Replace part of almond oil with a lighter oil such as MCT.

Stings eyes → Remove optional fragrance and ensure no essential oils are included.

Leaves residue → Slightly increase emulsifier within the 12–18% range.

Swaps & Customization

You can replace almond oil with other liquid carrier oils depending on your skin type.

Just remember: this is a rinse-off product. There is no need to use expensive, precious oils here. Save those for facial serums, where longer skin contact truly matters.

For acne-prone skin, choose lighter, low-comedogenic oils. For dry skin, slightly richer blends may feel more comforting.

If You Don’t Want to Formulate

If you prefer a ready-made option, look for cleansing oils labeled “oil-to-milk.”

Check the INCI for Polyglyceryl-4 Oleate or similar polyglyceryl emulsifiers. Choose minimal fragrance and barrier-friendly formulas.

One option is NEEDLY Mild Cleansing Oil, which emulsifies beautifully and suits sensitive skin when convenience is needed.

Final Thoughts

Evening Calm is more than a natural makeup remover oil.

It’s a reminder that cleansing doesn’t need to burn to be effective. That removing the day can feel gentle. That respecting your skin barrier changes everything.

When you understand why oils work — and how emulsification transforms them — you move from following routines to creating rituals.

And that shift is where calm begins.
